1. Application Timeline

  • Application Opens: September 16, 2024 (Fall 2025 intake)

  • Early Decision Deadline: November 1, 2024, 11:59 PM (EST)

  • Regular Decision Deadline: February 3, 2025, 11:59 PM (EST)

  • Decisions Released: By April 1, 2025

2. Eligibility Criteria

  • Undergraduate Degree: Bachelor’s in a quantitative field such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, or engineering.

  • Prerequisite Courses:

    • Programming

    • Discrete Mathematics

    • Data Structures and Algorithms

  • Mathematics and Statistics Skills: Basic proficiency is required.


3. Application Components

  • Online Application: Complete and submit via UPenn Engineering’s Graduate Admissions portal.

  • Resume: Detail academic background, work experience, research projects, publications, and technical skills.

  • Personal Statement: Up to two pages explaining your interest in the program, relevant experiences, future plans, and potential contributions.

  • Letters of Recommendation: Two letters, with at least one from a professor familiar with your academic abilities.

  • Transcripts: Unofficial transcripts from all institutions attended (official transcripts required upon admission).

  • Application Fee: $90 (fee waivers available under specific conditions).


4. Standardized Tests

  • GRE: Not required for the MSE Data Science program.

  • English Proficiency Tests: TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test (DET) scores required for non-native English speakers.

    • Minimum Scores:

      • TOEFL iBT: 100

      • IELTS: 7.5

      • DET: 125

    • Waivers: Available for students who have studied in English-speaking institutions.


5. Special Admission Tracks

  • Transfer Applicants: Current UPenn Engineering master’s students may transfer to the Data Science program after completing at least one semester and earning grades of A- or higher in specific courses. Deadlines: May 15 and December 15.

  • Dual Degrees: Available with certain programs (excluding CIS/CIT/SCMP).

  • Accelerated Master’s: Open to UPenn undergraduates in their junior year. Deadlines: May 15 and December 15.


6. Financial Information

  • Scholarships: Most master’s students do not receive financial aid. However, the Dean’s Master’s Scholarship offers $15,000 for the first year (available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents).

  • Assistantships: Students may apply for teaching or research assistantships to support tuition costs.
