The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has started issuing student e-Visas for newly admitted students. Once your student visa is approved, several important steps must be completed before and after you arrive in Hong Kong.

1. Download Your Visa Package

After receiving the approval email, download both of the following from the Hong Kong Government e-Visa system:

  • Notification Slip for Entry Visa/Permit (e-Visa)

  • Immigration Department letter(s)

Be sure to select "Download ALL" so that all required documents are saved.

2. Activate Your Student Visa

Your student visa becomes effective when you enter Hong Kong using the approved student visa.

At immigration, present:

  • Your printed e-Visa

  • Your valid passport or travel document

3. Keep Your Landing Slip

After entering Hong Kong, you will receive a Landing Slip. Verify that it correctly shows:

  • Student status

  • Visa expiry date ("Permitted to remain until")

  • Your English name

  • Passport number

  • Arrival date

Keep this document throughout your stay in Hong Kong.

4. Complete HKU Enrollment Details

After arriving in Hong Kong, log in to the HKU Student Visa Application System and complete Enrollment Details (Step 8).

Enter the visa expiry date exactly as it appears on your Landing Slip.

Do not complete this step before entering Hong Kong.

5. Students Already in Hong Kong

If you are currently staying in Hong Kong under another immigration status (such as a visitor), you must leave Hong Kong and re-enter using your student visa to activate your student status.

6. No Objection Letter (NOL)

Students who are eligible to work during their studies will receive a No Objection Letter (NOL) with their visa package.

The NOL specifies the types of employment permitted during the period of study. Keep this document for future reference.

7. Important Reminder

Plan your travel carefully. The latest activation date printed on the e-Visa cannot be changed. In addition, if your passport expires before the end of your academic programme, your permitted stay in Hong Kong may be shortened accordingly.

Following these procedures will help ensure a smooth arrival and enrollment at HKU.
