Not all international medical graduates can immediately practice medicine in the United States.
One pathway available to MBBS graduates is the MBBS to MD Pathway offered by Medical University of the Americas (MUA).
This program is designed for graduates of recognized MBBS programs. Through an Advanced Standing evaluation, eligible applicants may enter the MD curriculum at Semester 5, allowing them to build on their previous medical education rather than starting medical school from the beginning.
During Semester 5, students complete foundational medical sciences including Histology, Physiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Clinical Anatomy while preparing for USMLE Step 1. Students then continue through Semesters 6–10, completing Clinical Medicine coursework and 72 weeks of clinical rotations at affiliated hospitals in the United States and Canada.
According to school-published data, MUA reported a 93% residency placement rate over the most recent three academic years. The institution also reports a 5:1 student-to-faculty ratio and a network of more than 25 teaching hospitals across North America.
Applicants must hold an MBBS degree from a recognized medical school. In general, candidates should be within five years of graduation or currently practicing medicine under a medical license.
Application requirements include official transcripts, a personal statement of up to 500 words, two letters of recommendation, and passport-sized photographs.
International applicants are generally not required to submit MCAT scores. However, applicants from non-English-speaking countries may be required to demonstrate English proficiency through examinations such as the TOEFL.
As of September 2024, the published total program cost is approximately $127,625. International students may also qualify for an International Grant of $2,500 per semester, providing up to $15,000 in total financial assistance.
The MBBS to MD Pathway offers an additional route for international medical graduates seeking an MD degree and future residency opportunities in the United States or Canada.
