For students dreaming of a future built on creativity, few institutions rival the reputation and academic depth of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Situated in downtown Chicago, SAIC is not just a top-tier art school—it’s an incubator for emerging artists, designers, writers, and creative thinkers from around the globe.

A Globally Respected Art Education

SAIC consistently ranks among the top art and design schools worldwide. According to the QS World University Rankings, it holds a spot in the global top 10. Its unique affiliation with the Art Institute of Chicago Museum—home to one of the largest and most comprehensive art collections in the world—provides students with direct access to cultural and artistic resources few can match.

But rankings are only part of the story. What sets SAIC apart is its commitment to experimental thinking and interdisciplinary exploration. Students aren’t limited by traditional categories or media—they’re encouraged to redefine them.

Application at a Glance

To apply to SAIC’s undergraduate program, students must submit the following:

  • Common Application

  • Portfolio of 10–15 recent works (across any media)

  • Artist’s Statement (recommended 250–500 words)

  • Official high school transcript

  • One letter of recommendation

  • English proficiency scores (Duolingo 110, TOEFL 82 iBT, or equivalent)

SAIC takes a holistic approach to admissions. Portfolios are not judged solely on technical skill—they’re evaluated for originality, risk-taking, and the clarity of a student’s creative voice.

Merit-Based Scholarships

All applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships based on the strength of their portfolio and supporting materials. No separate scholarship application is required. This makes your visual and written materials even more critical to your success.

Estimated Cost of Attendance (2025–2026)

  • Tuition: Approximately $57,000 per year

  • Housing, meals, insurance, and fees: $18,000–$23,000

  • Total annual estimate: $75,000–$80,000

Despite the high cost, SAIC offers extensive support to international students, including work-study opportunities and scholarship advising.

First-Year Scholars Program: A Unique Opportunity

Top applicants are invited to join SAIC’s First-Year Scholars Program, a cohort-based academic enrichment experience. Highlights include:

  • A faculty-led winter study trip to Siena, Italy

  • A $3,000 grant to support travel expenses

  • Dedicated seminars and art history coursework

  • Community-building experiences with peers and mentors

This program is designed to help high-achieving students make the most of their first year and build meaningful relationships with faculty and fellow artists.

Why SAIC?

SAIC is not just a place to learn how to make art. It’s a place to understand why art matters—to culture, to society, and to your own growth as a thinker and creator. The admissions team values depth, curiosity, and the courage to experiment. Whether your strengths lie in illustration, film, digital media, or conceptual art, SAIC gives you the space and structure to grow.

At Kim Consulting, we’ve helped students from diverse backgrounds gain admission to SAIC with competitive portfolios and compelling artist statements. From strategic application planning to essay development and portfolio curation, our 1:1 coaching is tailored to each student’s creative journey.
